The company was established in 1816 when it was known as the Mutuelle de L’assurance contre L’incendie becoming AXA in 1985. Historically it has been involved in life, pensions, group pensions, protection, wealth management, insurance and healthcare for a number of years.
However a decision was made by AXA to dispose of many of the above products and it now focuses on wealth management, healthcare and insurance.
AXA UK employs about 12,000 people based in both the UK and Ireland and has around 16 million customers here in the UK. However, worldwide, AXA Group employ 214,000 people with operations in Europe, the Pacific/Asia areas and North America and have 95 million customers.
Here in the UK, the insurance arm specialises in car insurance, home insurance, travel insurance, pet insurance, business insurance and breakdown cover.
AXA provide up to 90% no claims discount with their comprehensive car insurance that is 20% more than you would receive from many car insurance companies and a free courtesy car if, following a claim that is valid, you are without a car.
An interesting optional extra with their car insurance is “Wrong fuel cover”. This provides cover if you put the wrong fuel in your car that is an expensive mistake to make. AXA will pay for the fuel system to be drained, flushed and replenished.
