In 1843 the Liverpool Victoria Legal Friendly Society was formed by a number of dock managers as a burial society. Members of a burial society made voluntary subscriptions to insure funds were paid on the death of a member or for funeral costs of the member’s wife, husband or children or a deceased member’s widow.
Subsequently it sold “penny policies” through agents around the UK to people who wanted to save.
Over the years it aquired numerous other mutuals and burial societies to become and remain the largest friendly society in the UK now employing 5,000 staff to look after more than 5 million customers out of 17 offices in the UK.
In May 2007 the society started to operate under the “LV=” brand. The L and V stand for Liverpool Victoria and the = refers to a society of “equals” with each member having one vote.
Today LV= provides, life insurance, savings and investments, retirement plans, car insurance, home insurance, travel insurance, pet insurance and breakdown cover.
LV= provide their own defaqto 5 star car insurance offering a choice of fully comprehensive, third party fire and theft or third party cover with up to 75% no claims discount.
You can apply for cover over the telephone through one of their UK call centres or online. Any repairs undertaken by an approved supplier will be guaranteed for 5 years and if you insure two or more cars with them you will receive a discount.
Optional extras with their car insurance include motor legal expenses of up to £100,000, courtesy car cover, European car insurance lasting up to 180 days, increased personal accident cover and breakdown cover.
